In recent times, Corn gluten meal as an herbicide is used as a pre-emergent. This means that the corn gluten meal, in powdered form, is spread on bare earth. It prevents the emergence of weeds by creating a susceptibility to dehydration.

The corn gluten allows the weeds to germinate, but not to grow roots. The sequence of product use is critical. After applying the powdered form of corn gluten, wet the area, using a light spray of water. Then allow the area to dry out for up to 6 weeks. The weeds germinate and then die.

If used in gardens, the gardener can target an area by laying down the corn gluten and working it into the surface of the soil. Planting a seedling with established roots will allow the plant to grow, but weeds will be suppressed. The gardener needs to water only the established plant; a sprinkler system may cancel the effects of the corn gluten.

Corn gluten, a product once used only to supplement farm-animal feed and pet food, came into use as a completely chemical-free, natural and inexpensive product with which to control weeds. It contains no contaminants that can seep into the ground water, and no chemicals that can harm the environment or humans. The result is that weeds like crabgrass, dandelions, smart weed and purslane, among others, can be stopped before they take root.
